Saga Prefecture hosts several fireworks events through summer, spread across different cities and waterfronts. Here’s where to base yourself if you want to watch from a hotel room.
Main festivals
- Saga City Summer Festival fireworks — August, along the Kase River in Saga city center.
- Karatsu City fireworks — Karatsu Bay; the setting pairs well with Karatsu Castle on the waterfront.
- Tosu City fireworks — August, Tosu (convenient from Fukuoka).
In Karatsu (for the bay fireworks)
Karatsu Seaside Hotel — directly on Karatsu Bay, with ocean-view rooms that look out toward the fireworks site. One of the few hotels with a direct waterfront position. Karatsu Buena Vista Hotel — near Karatsu Station, upper floors have bay views.
In Saga city
Hotel New Otani Saga — the tallest hotel in the city center; upper floor rooms overlook the city toward the river. Daiwa Roynet Hotel Saga — compact business hotel near Saga Station, useful base for festival day.
In Tosu (easy from Fukuoka)
Tosu is only about 30 minutes from Fukuoka by train (Shinkansen stop at Shin-Tosu). Hotel Route-Inn Tosu and Comfort Hotel Tosu are clean business hotels near the station. Staying in Fukuoka and day-tripping is also a reasonable option.
Tips
- Saga festivals are smaller than Fukuoka’s — hotels don’t sell out as fast, but weekends in August still fill up.
- Karatsu is 90 minutes from Fukuoka by train (Chikuhi Line); it’s also a good overnight destination in its own right.
Confirm dates on local official sites — schedules vary year to year.
