Beppu is Japan’s most famous hot spring town — it pumps out more hot spring water than anywhere else in the country. In summer, it adds fireworks to the mix: onsen, yukata, street food, and fireworks over the sea. If you’re planning a Kyushu trip in July or August, here’s what to expect and how to plan it.
What is the Beppu fireworks festival?
Beppu’s main summer event is the Beppu Ryono Hanabi (Beppu Summer Fireworks Festival), held around Beppu Spa Beach. Several thousand shells are launched out over the bay, and the highlight is the fireworks reflecting on the sea surface, set to music. Nearby in Oita City, the larger Oita Godo Shimbun Fireworks Festival runs along the Oita River — one of the biggest in the prefecture, with plenty of food stalls. Many travelers pair the two on a single summer trip.
When is it held?
Typically late July to early August. Summer fireworks dates in Japan are confirmed only a few months ahead, so always check the official site for the latest schedule before you book travel.
Why pair it with Beppu’s onsen
This is the real reason to come. Beppu isn’t just a fireworks stop — it’s one of Japan’s great hot spring destinations:
- Onsen everywhere — Beppu has the highest hot spring output in Japan. Soak before or after the show.
- The “Hells of Beppu” (jigoku meguri) — a tour of colorful, steaming hot spring “hells” you look at, not bathe in.
- Yukata — many visitors wear a light summer kimono to fireworks festivals; some ryokan lend one to guests.
Day trips from Beppu also reach Yufuin (a popular onsen town), Umitamago aquarium, and Takasakiyama (wild monkeys).
How to get to Beppu
- From Oita Airport: airport bus or taxi to Beppu / Oita city.
- From Fukuoka (Hakata): about 2 hours by JR (Nippo Main Line) to Beppu Station; highway buses also run from Fukuoka and other parts of Kyushu.
On festival days, expect crowds and limited parking — trains and buses are easier than driving.
Where to stay in Beppu
Onsen ryokan and hotels (such as the large Suginoi Hotel) book out fast on fireworks nights, so reserve early. Staying overnight also means you can enjoy the hot springs after the show.
Make it a day out
If you’d rather not plan the logistics, guided tours cover Beppu’s hells, onsen, and nearby Yufuin.
