Kagoshima has one of Japan’s most dramatic fireworks backdrops: the active Sakurajima volcano, rising straight out of the bay. Two big shows use it — here’s what to know.
Kinko Bay Summer Night Fireworks
Kagoshima’s main summer event, with around 15,000 shells over Kinko Bay against Sakurajima — one of Kyushu’s largest, known for huge two-shaku shells fired simultaneously and music-synced sequences. There are free viewing areas and paid seats. Usually held in late August.
Sakurajima Art Fireworks
A separate, premium spring event (around 13,500 shells) where the whole show is choreographed to music with a story — all seating is paid and reserved. Held at Marine Port Kagoshima.
How to get there
Both are near central Kagoshima. From JR Kagoshima-Chuo Station, take a city bus or tram toward the port; shuttle buses usually run on festival days. Kagoshima is about 1.5 hours from Fukuoka by shinkansen, so it’s best as an overnight trip.
Local food to try
Try Kagoshima kurobuta (Berkshire pork), satsuma-age fish cakes, local shochu, and shirokuma — a famous mountain of shaved ice with fruit and condensed milk.
Where to stay
Bay-view rooms facing Sakurajima are the prize — book early for festival nights.
