Kyushu hosts some of Japan’s most impressive fireworks festivals, from national-scale competitive shows to small waterfront events. Here is how the major ones compare.

Top tier: major national shows

Huis Ten Bosch Fireworks — Sasebo, Nagasaki

Consistently cited as the largest fireworks event in Kyushu by shell count — around 22,000 shells, with music-synchronised sequences. The Dutch-themed resort backdrop makes for an unusual visual. Usually held in autumn. Hotel packages with viewing spots sell out very fast.

Chikugogawa Fireworks Festival — Kurume, Fukuoka

One of the most spectacular riverfront shows in western Japan, with over 18,000 shells launched from the Chikugo River. The sound from the close-range launches is part of the experience — you feel the large shells in your chest. Usually mid-August. Draws around 700,000 spectators.

Yatsushiro National Fireworks Competition — Yatsushiro, Kumamoto

A competitive show where licensed pyrotechnicians submit shells to be judged on technical skill and artistry. Usually early October. Over 20,000 shells. The competition format means you see a wider range of unusual shell types than at a standard display. One of Japan’s most respected competitive shows.

Kagoshima Kinkowan Summer Night Fireworks — Kagoshima city

Launched over Kinko Bay with Sakurajima volcano as a backdrop — one of the most visually dramatic settings in Japan. Usually August. A hotel room with a bay view is the most comfortable option; the waterfront viewing area gets very crowded.

Second tier: large regional shows

Kanmon Strait Fireworks Festival — Shimonoseki / Kitakyushu

Over 1 million spectators. Launched simultaneously from both sides of the Kanmon Strait between Honshu and Kyushu. One of the largest crowd events in western Japan. Usually mid-August.

Omura Summer Festival Fireworks — Omura, Nagasaki

Smaller in scale but beautifully set on Omura Bay. The reflections on the enclosed bay water make for striking photography.

Seasonal calendar

  • May: Hakata Dontaku (Fukuoka)
  • July to August: Kanmon Strait, Kagoshima Kinkowan, Chikugogawa, smaller local events
  • October: Yatsushiro Competition, Huis Ten Bosch

Exact dates change year to year — always verify on the official event sites before planning travel.
