Driving to a Japanese fireworks festival is tempting — flexibility, no train queues. But parking near major venues is genuinely difficult, and a bad plan can result in hours of wasted time.
The core problem
Major festivals draw tens of thousands of cars. Official car parks near the venue fill hours before the show — sometimes by early afternoon for an evening event. Roadside parking is prohibited near festival areas on the day.
What the official site tells you
Every major festival publishes parking information — a map of official car parks, their capacity, opening times, and whether a shuttle bus runs. Read this before you go.
- Where are the official lots, and when do they open?
- Is there a shuttle? How frequent?
- Is there a fee? Usually 500 to 1,000 yen per car.
Remote parking and shuttle
Many large festivals set up park-and-ride lots 1 to 3 km from the venue, with regular shuttle buses. This is often the smoothest option — you avoid congestion near the venue and the shuttle lets you focus on the festival. Exiting is also easier than from lots right at the venue.
After the show: traffic
Leaving after a major fireworks show means sitting in traffic. Ways to manage it:
- Wait 30 to 60 minutes at a nearby restaurant or convenience store — the surge passes within an hour
- Plan an alternate route out in advance using Google Maps
When driving is a bad idea
For the very largest festivals — Kanmon Strait (1 million spectators), Chikugogawa (700,000) — the traffic situation is severe. Public transport is genuinely better for these events. Driving can mean 2 to 3 hours stuck in traffic after already being at a festival for 5 hours.
Summary
- Check the official site for parking maps and shuttle info before your trip
- Arrive early — lots fill faster than you expect
- Remote plus shuttle is often better than trying to park close
- For the biggest events, seriously consider public transport instead
